Virtual Private Network (VPN)

The College’s Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows you to access computing resources at Haverford that would normally be limited to people on campus. Certain library resources, document storage, and some servers are limited to those physically on campus. Using VPN, your computer appears as if it is on the Haverford campus no matter where in the world you are.

By default everyone at Haverford has a VPN account. Your Haverford username and password are the credentials you use to log in to Haverford VPN.

VPN Accounts for Non-Haverford Users

If you do not have a Haverford username and password, but still need a VPN account for College-related business, you may request an account. A separate application should be completed for each account requested and each account must have an expiration date. IITS will respond within two business days.

Library Users

The Haverford College Libraries offer an expansive range of online resources. VPN of course makes it possible to access these resources from off-campus. Library patrons can also take advantage of the EZProxy Service. Once logged into EZProxy, online resources provided by the Libraries are available to you as if you were on campus. If you generally only access library resources from off-campus then EZProxy is probably the best solution for you.

Installing and Using VPN

You only need to use the VPN service if you are connecting from off campus to access certain Haverford resources. Note: some DSL and Cable Internet services, along with some public Internet services (like in some coffee shops or hotels) don’t allow VPN to work – but most do. Typically you won’t know until you try.

 

Wireless Guest Access

Anyone can use the network named Haverford-Guest to browse the web.

If you need to access other internet services, such as the Storage server or Keyserved applications, you will need to connect to Eduroam.

To connect to Haverford-Guest you will need access to a cell phone capable of receiving either text messages or email to complete the following steps:

  1. Connect to Haverford-Guest as you would connect to any wireless network. On Windows computers you can connect via your network control panel; on Macintosh computers you can connect via your network preferences; on Mac iOS you can connect via Settings -> Wi-Fi; on a cell phone connect via Settings > Wi-Fi
  2. Browse to any web page using FireFox, Internet Explorer, Safari, or any other web browser.  You will be automatically redirected to the Visitor Registration Page:

  3. Fill out the form appropriately.  Passwords will be sent to you via email.  To also receive your password via text message, be sure to enter your cell phone number.
  4. At the following page, click the login page link:
  5. Enter your FULL EMAIL ADDRESS (for Username) along with the password you received via text or email.
  6. Click the Log in  button.
  7. If you get a Security message, click Continue.

Wireless Troubleshooting Guide

Mac Users

Should your device lose its connection with Eduroam you can follow the steps below to troubleshoot.

Mac Users

Mac computers can sometimes continue to have problems and need a few extra steps. If your Mac computer still has difficulty connecting, clear out the old Haverford-Secure and or Eduroam network settings by following these instructions : 

Step 1: Click on your Wireless Network icon on your menu bar

Step 3: Select Airport on the left hand side. Turn Airport off and then select advanced

Step 4:  Clear out any Haverford Network Names (Haverford-Secure, Eduroam, Guest, Connect, etc). To clear out the network names, select the network and click the Minus sign (-).

Step 5:  Go to System Preferences and click on Profiles (10.7 and Later)

Wifi & Wired Connections

Connecting to the Haverford Wireless (Wifi) is a fairly easy process.

Eduroam

Haverford College is a member of the Eduroam Consortium. This partnership comes with two key benefits:

  • As a member of the Haverford Community, you can easily use the wireless network at other member institutions by using your Haverford username and password to log on.
  • Visitors from other member institutions can easily use our wireless network, and log on with their home institution username and password.

Eduroam is a consortium that began in Europe in 2003 and has spread to academic institutions in 54 countries worldwide. A list of US and International Eduroam-participating institutions is available on the Eduroam website.

Haverford community members can use Eduroam on campus

The Eduroam network gives Haverford users access to all internal resources (like Storage and the Quaker domain). Use your full Haverford email address including the @haverford.edu as your username, along with your Haverford password.

Android Users:

The most current version of the Android OS requires some new settings which are below:

EAP method: PEAP

Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPV2

CA certificate: Use System certificates

Online certificate Status: Do Not Validate

Domain: noc.haverford.edu

Identity: Full Haverford email address

Anonymous identity: Leave blank

Password:  Current password used for Haverford email

Connecting at an Eduroam School

Once you join the Eduroam network at Haverford on a device, that device should work seamlessly at other Eduroam participating institutions.

Every Eduroam institution has a wireless network (called an SSID) called eduroam (all lower case). When you see the eduroam SSID, simply connect to it. If prompted to enter a username and password, use your full Haverford e-mail address as the username and your Haverford password.

Visitors from Eduroam schools can connect at Haverford

Likewise, here at Haverford we have an SSID called eduroam. Visitors from participating schools (including Bryn Mawr College, Swarthmore College and University of Pennsylvania) can use their e-mail address and password to connect. Those who are adept at configuring their own devices can connect to the eduroam network directly. For users with devices that are more difficult to configure for encrypted networks, like older Windows laptops, they can first join the HaverfordConnect SSID, open a web browser and follow the Eduroam instructions.

Eduroam networks are secure

The Eduroam consortium has very high security standards. All data that moves across an eduroam network is encrypted end-to-end using technology called 802.1x. Someone with special snooping tools would see nothing more than a jumble.

Haverford-Guest Network

Guests:  If you are a guest to campus, please follow the instructions for connecting to Haverford-Guest.

Tri-Co Community Members and Members of Eduroam Participating Organizations:  Be sure to properly prepare your computer before attempting to connect to our secure network by following the directives below:

  • Anti-Virus:  You must have updated anti-virus software actively running before connecting to our secure network.
  • Update Your Computer’s OS.
  • If you have a Mac, be sure to check for OS updates using the instructions here Mac OS updates
  • If you have a PC be sure you run Windows Update to install all important updates.
